Who’s on the Front Porch When You’re Not There?

When you go to work, head out for the day or (at some point) go on summer vacation, is there a way to know who’s coming to your door while you’re gone? Unless your neighbors have unlimited time to watch over your property while you’re away, the only solution is home security cameras. And if you want an instant text alert to come to your phone that prompts you to view the live video immediately, you’ll need something even more powerful: smart home security cameras, which are intelligent devices with motion sensor capability.

When Summer Starts Early, Home Security Can Help

Depending on what decision is made at the state level in the next few weeks, 2020 could be the year that summer starts early for many school-aged kids. If so, parents who are returning to their workplaces will need a way to stay on top of what’s going on at home. Luckily, there’s home security technology to help with that. For parents who need immediate solutions, here’s what we suggest implementing.

Outside Video Surveillance

We recommend starting out with home security cameras, which are motion detected so that they start recording the moment someone goes near them. With one of these installed at your front door, you’ll receive a phone notification with instant viewing of the video clip as soon as one of the kids leaves the house or has a friend over. Since whether or not those things are allowed is up to parents, you can view the video and respond accordingly. This kind of residential video surveillance is also an excellent way to make sure the kids are keeping the front door closed to strangers.

Inside Video Surveillance

If your children are just starting to stay home alone, or they have a sitter and you’d like to monitor their care, then you may be looking for a more powerful monitoring solution. When that’s the case, we often suggest installing video surveillance inside the house as well – specifically, placing cameras in the rooms where the children are most frequently. Some parents also choose to install a camera near any off-limits areas of the home, including places where firearms are stored or liquor is kept. Whatever your inside security concerns are for your children, ask us how we can help.

Home Security in a Time of Social Distancing

In this time of social distancing, the need to stay connected to the people we love is critical. If you’re a homeowner who takes advantage of smart home security, then you have technology on your side. While the video conferencing tools you’re using can help you stay connected to work, your home security technology can help you stay connected to family. Here are some ideas.

Smart Home Security Cameras – If you’re a parent who is called to be an essential worker during this crisis, you need a way to see what’s going on at home while you’re away. Your smart home security cameras can be the solution. With the motion sensor camera at your front door, you’ll know whether the kids are:

  • Staying in the house like they’re supposed to
  • Following national guidelines for social distancing from friends
  • Keeping themselves fed with delivery services, and making sure the food is being dropped at the door without contact

Motion Sensor Smartphone Alerts – If there’s any motion at the front door, your smart home security camera sends an alert to your phone whenever motion is detected. At that moment, you can view the video clip to see who was at the door or leaving the house. This is a great way to make sure kids are honoring the rules during this serious time.

Wellness Monitoring for Older Loved Ones – Of course, many of us need to keep an eye on older loved ones as well. During this time of mandated separation, there’s home security technology for that as well. One solution is the Wellcam, which is a video camera with a call-out button and two-way voice capability. With the Wellcam, your parents or grandparents can directly connect to you with the push of a button rather than the phone.

Alerts that Inform You of Changes – When you are listed as the authorized person on your loved one’s account, the Wellcam will send you an alert for a variety of issues – whether it’s unusual activity happening at night, failing to take medication, or other changes in activity patterns that may point to a deterioration in your loved one’s quality of life. In a time of social distancing from the people you care for most, this technology can be a lifeline.

Automating Your Home with Smart Scenes

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a magic button that did all your home management tasks at the same time? If you have the Scenes feature on your smart home security app, you do. In fact, Scenes gives you than one button: Home, Away, Sleep and Wake Up. Each of these buttons is constructed for those times of day where you need to have your system do multiple things at the same time. What times of day? Here are the four that already have buttons built into the scenes feature.

Coming Home – When you return home from work, the last thing you want is to enter a dark house. By tapping on the Home button, you’re commanding your system to turn on the interior lights and unlock the front door. Now, entering the house is a comforting experience rather than an anxious one.</div>

Leaving Home – Leaving home for the day or evening? Tap the Away button to command your system to set your alarm, lock your front door, close your garage and adjust your thermostat. After that quick tap, you’re ready to leave and can relax about what’s going on at home.</div>

Going to Bed – At bedtime, you’ll want to turn the lights off and lock the doors. That’s the job of your Sleep button. Of course, it also sets the alarm to make sure you sleep soundly without fear of intrusion. And because our systems are energy conscious, this button also turns down the thermostat for the night.

Waking Up -When you wake up, tap the Wake Up button to turn on specific lights, warm up the house by a few degrees and disarm the alarm until everyone is out the door. As soon as they’re off for the day, you can switch back to the Away button to arm the system as you leave. It’s amazing what you can accomplish with just a couple of taps.

Need help figuring out how to use your Scenes feature? We can help. Call GuardMe Security if you have questions on your Scenes feature, or if you’d like to have this feature added to your smart home security system.

When a Burglar Smashes Your Security Panel

If a burglar breaks into your house and smashes your security panel to disable it, can your system still do its job? If you have made the choice to include crash and smash protection as an enhancement to your service, then the answer is yes. Let’s look at how burglars view crash and smash break-ins, and how an added layer of protection can suppress crash and smash attempts.

How Burglars View Crash and Smash Break-Ins – When carrying out a crash and smash break-in attempt, a burglar’s plan is to destroy the security panel to keep the system from signaling for help. The idea is to take advantage of the system’s time delay, which is the 30 to 60 second window that gives the homeowner time to disarm the system before the alarm sounds or the signal is sent to the monitoring center. By smashing the panel, the burglar thinks that the system will not sound the alarm or send the signal. The good news for homeowners is this: With crash and smash protection, that’s not exactly what happens.

No Sound, But Still a Signal – While it’s true that the alarm won’t sound when the burglar smashes the panel, crash and smash protection does preserve the signal. Thanks to cloud security technology, the system will signal for help regardless. More good news for the homeowner: You’ll still receive a smartphone alert about the break-in, but the burglar will remain in the dark until help arrives because the alarm won’t sound.

Crash and smash burglaries happen, but crash and smash protection makes sure you still get the help you need. To learn more about this enhancement to your home security system, call GuardMe Security today. We look forward to answering your questions.
